There's no doubt about it: teachers help shape the minds of tomorrow. Without the help of school administrators, though, success is not guaranteed. That's why so many educators shift from working in the classroom with students to the administrative side of education. Whether they are looking to extend their reach to the most students possible, achieve new career heights or simply challenge themselves to something new, aspiring school administrators have their work cut out for themselves.

For some, going back to school is in order. Many educators opt to pursue their masters or doctorate. Others may choose to take the Praxis School Leadership Licensure Assessment, or SLLA. This exam tests the competency of those who opt not to pursue a higher level degree in their quest to become school administrators. Used across the country to certify kindergarten through 12th grade administrators, the SLLA requires test takers to exhibit a high level of understanding of the challenges and decisions made by principals, assistant principals and other administrators.

Given three times a year, the SLLA is based around the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium, or ISSLC. While the test itself does not prepare educators for a career as administrators, it does gauge the knowledge and problem-solving abilities of test takers. Comprised of two sections, the SLLA test uses both multiple choice and constructed response questions to test the knowledge of future administrators. The 100 multiple choice questions revolve around the following five categories:

  • Vision and goals
  • Teaching and learning
  • Managing organizational systems and safety
  • Collaboration with stakeholders
  • Ethics and integrity

Test takers may work for up to two hours and 20 minutes on the multiple choice questions. Next, they'll have an hour and 40 minutes to face seven constructed responses. These essay questions cover the education system, teaching and learning as well as vision and goals. A passing score of 173 points is generally required for those educators who opt to take the SLLA test in lieu of grad school, but each state's requirements differ slightly.

Typically, the SLLA is taken on the computer, though paper versions of the test may be available. Some portions of the computer version are interactive, requiring test takers to click and drag a graphic of their choosing. The cost for registration for the SLLA is $425, though other fees may be associated with the test

Preparing for the Exam

There are many ways to prepare oneself for the Praxis SLLA test. For those nervous about scoring well, a prep class may be in order. These classes can be taken in person or online for convenience. Though not as in-depth as a graduate level education administrators course might be, a prep class can help test takers review for the SLLA.

Exam Edge features thousands of practice test questions for school administrators hoping to pass the SLLA. These comprehensive questions incorporate both the content and application of skills necessary to be a successful school administrator. We know just how pricey it can be to take this test, which is why Exam Edge offers a free sample practice test to users.

The sheer psychological advantages of taking practice exams shouldn't be discounted. In addition to the material you'll review when taking a practice test, you'll also find yourself more comfortable with the format and pacing. By the time you sit for the Praxis SLLA, standardized testing will be like muscle memory – but only if you've practiced.

The Big Day

The night before the SLLA, be sure to get to bed early for a full night's sleep. Dine on protein for breakfast and leave plenty of extra time to arrive at the testing center. Proper identification is required for the exam, so be sure to bring your driver's license or passport along with you. It's also a good idea to bring a couple of pencils, erasers, and a bottle of water to the testing center.

There's no secret formula to acing the SLLA test, but with the right preparation and understanding of the exam's format, you're certain to get the score you need. Whether you have months to go or just days before the exam, taking a practice SLLA test is a great way to give yourself an edge.
