What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications - FAQ Sample Questions

What is the first stage of the student evaluation process?

Correct Answer:
the student is monitored for some time before further action is taken.
the first stage of the student evaluation process is when the student is monitored for some time before any further action is taken.

this initial stage is crucial as it involves observing the student's performance and behavior in a natural educational setting without any premature conclusions or interventions. the purpose of this monitoring phase is to gather baseline data on the student's capabilities and challenges. educators and specialists look for patterns or consistent issues that might indicate learning difficulties or other educational needs.

during this period, teachers and support staff pay close attention to the student’s academic work, social interactions, and emotional well-being. they may take note of how the student interacts with peers, responds to teaching, and manages tasks and instructions. this observational data is essential as it guides the decision on whether to proceed to more formal assessments and interventions.

the monitoring phase is non-intrusive and is part of the regular educational activities. it does not single out the student but rather ensures a comprehensive understanding of the student's educational experience. this approach helps in making informed decisions that are tailored to the student's unique needs, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of any subsequent educational planning and support.

Which of the following is NOT a factor of 'intelligence' proposed by Psychologist E.L. Thorndike?

Correct Answer:
emotional.

edward lee thorndike, a prominent american psychologist, proposed several theories on animal and human learning. his theory on human intelligence is specifically noted for its breakdown into different types. thorndike identified three main types of intelligence: abstract, mechanical, and social. each of these types plays a unique role in how individuals understand and interact with the world around them.

**abstract intelligence** involves the ability to process and understand logical and symbolic thought processes. this type of intelligence is crucial for solving mathematical problems, engaging in complex reasoning, and understanding symbols in languages. it essentially refers to the capacity to understand theoretical concepts that are not directly tied to concrete physical realities.

**mechanical intelligence** relates to the ability to understand and work with objects. this type of intelligence is evident when individuals manipulate and manage mechanical or physical objects effectively. people with high mechanical intelligence are typically skilled at constructing, using, and fixing machinery or other physical constructs. this intelligence type is crucial for roles in engineering, craftsmanship, and other fields that require spatial and mechanical skills.

**social intelligence** is defined by thorndike as the ability to understand and manage people and to act wisely in human relationships. this involves being aware of the motives, feelings, and behaviors of others and oneself. it's crucial for effective communication, empathy, leadership, and negotiation. social intelligence allows individuals to navigate complex social environments and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships.

notably, thorndike did not include **emotional intelligence** in his framework. emotional intelligence, a concept popularized much later by researchers such as peter salovey and john mayer, and widely recognized through daniel goleman's work, refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. it encompasses aspects of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, which are somewhat related to thorndike's concept of social intelligence but are considered a distinct category of intelligence in contemporary psychology.

therefore, when considering the types of intelligence proposed by e.l. thorndike, 'emotional' intelligence is not one of them. this highlights an evolution in the understanding and categorization of intelligence in psychological studies from thorndike's time to the present.
