How do I register for the real Ohio Assessments for Educators?

For up-to-date information about registration for the Ohio Assessments for Educators, refer to the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

What are the OAE exams?

You are nearing the end of your journey to become an educator in the state of Ohio and know the OAEs are approaching. Exactly what are the OAEs all about?

The Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) are required for candidates seeking initial Ohio educator licensure or who are adding a new licensure area. The OAEs are aligned with Ohio Academic Content Standards and Common Core State Standards.

The testing requirements are dependent on the licensure type and include at least one test assessing content knowledge and one test of professional (pedagogical) knowledge which is level-specific. (See www.oh.nesinc.com to find the specific assessments required.) Content knowledge assessments range from 2 to 4 ¼ hours for 100 to 150 multiple-choice items. While the exams are largely computer-based, a few content area tests include constructed-response items. The professional knowledge assessments are also computer-based and contain 100 multiple-choice questions, one case study written assignment, and one work product written assignment. Three hours are allotted for these exams.

Scores for the OAEs are scaled from 100 to 300 with 220 being the minimum passing score. Score reports can be emailed if it is requested upon registration. Otherwise the score report will be available in your account on a specified date dependent on the date the assessment was taken.

OAE Biology - FAQ Sample Questions

A group of salamanders would be placed on which level in an ecosystem?

Correct Answer:
 population level

in ecology, understanding the different levels of organization is crucial to studying how living organisms interact with each other and their environment. these levels range from the smallest, the organism, to the most expansive, the biosphere. each level has a distinct role and definition in the study of ecological systems.

at the most basic level, we have the organism level. this level pertains to an individual living entity, such as a single salamander. an organism is capable of functioning independently, with systems to support life processes such as respiration, reproduction, and feeding. moving up from the organism, we encounter the population level. this level refers to all the individuals of the same species living in a specific area who interbreed. for example, a group of salamanders in a particular forest would constitute a population.

above the population, we have the community level. this encompasses all the different populations (various species) that live together in a defined area. the community level focuses on how these populations interact with each other, such as through predation, competition, and symbiosis. for instance, in a forest, the community would include not only the salamander population but also the populations of trees, birds, insects, other amphibians, and any other organisms living there.

the next level is the ecosystem level. an ecosystem includes all the biotic (living) components, like the community, along with the abiotic (non-living) components, such as the weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, and atmosphere. in our example, the ecosystem could be the entire forest that houses the community as well as the physical landscape and climate that affect them.

therefore, when considering where to place a group of salamanders in an ecosystem, they are best situated at the population level. this level is appropriate because it specifically addresses a group of the same species in a given area, focusing on their collective biological interactions and demographics, such as birth and death rates, which influence their survival and reproduction as a species within the broader ecosystem.

A scientist identifies a rock formation that has approximately 20 grams of potassium; it had 40 when it was formed. Tests show that it now has five (5) grams of potassium-40. If the half-life of potassium-40 is 1.3 billion years, how old is its rock formation?

Correct Answer:
3.9 billion years.

to determine the age of a rock formation using potassium-40, a common radioactive isotope used in geological dating, scientists measure the decay of this isotope over time. potassium-40 has a half-life of 1.3 billion years, meaning that every 1.3 billion years, half of the potassium-40 in a sample will have decayed into other elements.

in the given scenario, the rock formation originally contained 40 grams of potassium-40. according to the data, it now contains only 5 grams of potassium-40. to find out how many half-lives have passed to reduce the original amount to the current amount, we can track the decay process step by step: 1. after one half-life (1.3 billion years), half of the original 40 grams would have decayed, leaving 20 grams of potassium-40. 2. after a second half-life (another 1.3 billion years, totaling 2.6 billion years), half of the remaining 20 grams would decay, leaving 10 grams. 3. after a third half-life (another 1.3 billion years, totaling 3.9 billion years), half of the remaining 10 grams would decay, leaving 5 grams.

thus, it has taken three half-lives, or 3.9 billion years (1.3 billion years per half-life x 3), for the potassium-40 to decay from 40 grams to 5 grams. therefore, the rock formation is approximately 3.9 billion years old. this method of dating, similar to carbon dating but used for much older geological formations, relies on the predictable and constant rate of radioactive decay in isotopes like potassium-40.
