What are the AONE exams?

What is the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE)?

The AONE (American Organization of Nurse Executives) certifies nurse managers and nurse leaders engaged in executive nursing practice. Exactly what can you expect with the AONE certification exams?

The AONE exams are based on skills necessary for success in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) and as a Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML). Candidates for either certification exam need to apply online at www.aone.org or by paper application (form is available on website). 90 days are allowed from confirmation of eligibility within which a candidate must schedule and take the exam. Exams are administered at AMP Assessment Centers (typically located in H & R Block offices) Mondays through Saturdays from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Test times must be scheduled in advance. Application can be made for special administrations for laptop or paper-and-pencil formats. The multiple-choice questions on both exams are job-related and test the application and analysis of information, not just recall of isolated facts.

CNML Exam

The CNML exam: A maximum of 2 hours is given for the 115-item exam testing knowledge of four core principles: financial management, human resource management, performance improvement, and strategic management and technology. Scores are based on 100 questions with 15 "trial" items interspersed throughout the test. A passing score of 70 is required to pass the CNML.

CENP Exam

The CENP exam: A maximum of 3.5 hours is given for the 175-item exam testing five competency areas: communication and relationship building, knowledge of health care environment, professionalism, business skills, and leadership. The score is based on 150 questions with 25 "trial” items interspersed throughout the test. A passing score of 110 is required to pass the CENP.

Paper-and-pencil exam results for both the CNML and the CENP will be by mail within 5 weeks of the testing date. You will receive the results of the computer exam before leaving the testing facility. Certification is issued within 6 weeks.
