How do I register for the real American Society for Clinical Pathology?

For up-to-date information about registration for the American Society for Clinical Pathology, refer to the American Society for Clinical Pathology website.

What are the ASCP exams?

Congratulations on your decision to become a medical laboratory professional! The ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) exams are your next hurdle. Exactly what can you expect with the ASCP exams?

What is the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)?

The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exams verify that an individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to perform the required tasks in the medical laboratory. Eligibility requirements to sit for the ASCP exams vary by category, but all include a combination of education, training, and experience. The ASCP website outlines all possible pathways for each certificate area. Once eligibility has been confirmed, you are ready to schedule and take your exam.

The ASCP Board of Certification exams use Computer Adaptive testing which individualizes each exam to the ability level of the examinee. A more difficult question follows a correct response and a less difficult question follows an incorrect answer. This process enables the BOC to determine more accurately the measure of a candidate’s knowledge and skill levels in each area. Each question is calibrated for level of difficulty and is assigned a content area. The value (weight) given to each question is determined by its level of difficulty. The candidate must answer enough difficult questions to achieve a score above a previously established pass point. The highest attainable score is 999 with 400 being set as the minimum passing score. Preliminary results (pass/fail) will appear on the computer screen at the completion of the testing session. You will receive notification of your exam score within 4 business days of the exam date. This official score report will indicate pass/fail status and the scaled score on the total exam.

ASCP Board of Certification exams (except the PBT and DPT) are scheduled for 2 hours and 30 minutes with 100 questions. The PBT is scheduled for 2 hours with 80 questions and the DPT is 2 hours and 30 minutes with 90 questions.

ASCP Histotechnologist International - FAQ Sample Questions

What type of tissue processor transfers tissue samples from container to container to be processed?

Correct Answer:
tissue transfer machines.

the correct answer to the question about the type of tissue processor that transfers tissue samples from container to container for processing is the tissue transfer machines. tissue transfer machines are specifically designed to move tissue samples through different containers, each containing processing solutions needed for the preparation of tissues for microscopic examination.

tissue processing is a crucial step in histology, involving the preparation of tissue samples from fixation to embedding. fixation stabilizes the tissue structures, crucial for maintaining the cellular details that are necessary for accurate diagnosis under a microscope. after fixation, the tissue must be processed to replace water with a medium that supports cutting thin sections, typically paraffin wax.

in contrast to tissue transfer machines, fluid transfer machines work by keeping the tissue samples in a single chamber, where various processing fluids are introduced and removed as required. this method avoids the physical movement of tissues between containers, potentially minimizing tissue disruption and loss.

while both types of tissue processors - tissue transfer and fluid transfer - effectively prepare tissues for embedding and subsequent sectioning, they operate on fundamentally different principles concerning the handling of tissue samples and reagents. tissue transfer machines are more traditional and involve sequential immersion of tissues into different containers filled with processing solutions, such as dehydrants, clearing agents, and infiltration waxes.

When the Albert’s stain process is complete, what shows as a bluish black color?

Correct Answer:
metachromatic granules.

the correct answer is metachromatic granules. albert's stain is a specific staining technique used primarily in microbiology to identify and visualize metachromatic granules within cells. these granules are typically found in certain bacteria, such as corynebacterium diphtheriae, which causes diphtheria. metachromatic granules are storage sites within the bacteria for phosphate reserves and other materials.

albert’s stain utilizes a two-step procedure involving albert stain a and albert stain b. albert stain a contains a mixture of toluidine blue, malachite green, glacial acetic acid, distilled water, and alcohol. this stain binds to the phosphate compounds within the metachromatic granules. following the application of albert stain a, albert stain b, which consists of distilled water, potassium iodide, and iodine, is used. this stain helps in fixing the color and enhancing the contrast between the granules and the cellular material.

when the staining process is complete, the metachromatic granules appear as a bluish-black color. this color change occurs because the granules contain substances that cause the dyes in the stain to shift their color (metachromasy). in contrast, the rest of the cell material appears green due to the malachite green dye in albert stain a. the stark color difference makes it easier to distinguish the granules from other cellular components under a microscope, providing crucial diagnostic and research information about the presence and distribution of these granules in the sample being examined.
