We also know that everyone likes to study differently, so we offer three different ways to use your NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist practice exams:

  • Timed NBRC CRT Practice Test Mode: Timed tests are just like the NBRC CRT exam. Our system sets the test time to the same time limit, or time limit per question, that you will experience with the actual exam on test day. This is a great method of practicing your pacing, especially if you're concerned about completing your exam within the time limit.

  • Untimed NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist Practice Test Mode: With this option, you can take your time and thoroughly consider each question before answering. This rush-free mode is recommended for those dipping their toes into exam prep or just starting on their journey to take the NBRC CRT. It is a great way to test your knowledge with no time limit and highlight blind spots you will need to come back to in your studies - one of the many advantages of taking NBRC CRT practice exams with Exam Edge!

  • NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist Study Guide Mode: Not sure where to even begin with your studying? Try a practice test in explanation mode. The questions act as a study guide, giving you the option to see the answers as you take the test. Study guide mode is an effective way to review the NBRC CRT exam subject matter before you take the exam in a timed format. We recommend taking a practice test in explanation mode and taking thorough notes as the best method for beginning your test prep.

NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist - Features Sample Questions

Your patient is having intermittent positive-pressure breathing (IPPB) therapy; however, the pressure is not rising after triggering. You might recommend all but which of the following solutions?

Correct Answer:
coach the patient to breathe faster.

intermittent positive pressure breathing (ippb) therapy is a respiratory treatment that uses a ventilator to deliver air into the lungs under positive pressure during inhalation, and allows passive exhalation. the primary goals of this therapy are to help keep the lungs fully inflated, aid in secretion clearance, and prevent or treat atelectasis (collapse of part or all of a lung). when the therapy machine fails to build pressure, there could be several factors involved, and resolving these issues requires attention to both the equipment and the patient's technique.

the first step in troubleshooting an ippb machine that isn't building pressure would be to ensure there are no leaks in the circuit. leaks can occur anywhere in the system, including the tubing, connections, or the mask or mouthpiece. these leaks allow air to escape, preventing the buildup of adequate pressure necessary for effective therapy. ensuring all components are tightly connected and that there are no holes or tears in the tubing is essential.

the use of nose clips might also be recommended. nose clips ensure that air delivered through the mouthpiece does not escape through the nose, which can contribute to insufficient pressure buildup in the lungs. by clamping the nose shut, nose clips help direct all the ventilatory effort through the mouth, enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment.

another solution could involve adjusting the interface between the patient and the device, such as ensuring a tight seal with the mouthpiece or mask. a poor seal can lead to significant air leakage and reduce the pressure delivered to the airways. coaching the patient on how to achieve and maintain a tight lip seal or fitting them with an appropriately sized mask can help overcome this issue.

however, coaching the patient to breathe faster is generally not recommended as a solution when the ippb machine fails to build pressure. faster breathing does not address the fundamental issues of leaks or poor sealing, and may in fact exacerbate the problem by increasing the volume of air that escapes from any existing leaks before pressure can build adequately. additionally, faster breathing might lead to hyperventilation and discomfort, potentially compromising the effectiveness of the therapy.

instead, focus should be on ensuring equipment integrity, proper patient technique, and correct settings on the ippb device. these steps generally help resolve pressure issues more effectively than altering the patient's breathing rate.

If a 3-year-old child has a foreign-body obstruction and is unconscious, which of the following actions should be taken?

Correct Answer:
abdominal thrusts

when dealing with a foreign-body airway obstruction in an unconscious 3-year-old child, the recommended procedure is to perform back blows and chest compressions, not abdominal thrusts. the process involves first calling for emergency medical help immediately. once help has been summoned, the rescuer should begin the emergency response protocol for an unconscious child, which differs significantly from the approach used for adults or conscious children.

initially, the rescuer should check the child's responsiveness and breathing. if the child is not breathing or only gasping, the rescuer should begin by giving 5 back blows. the child should be placed face down on the rescuer's forearm, supported by the thigh, ensuring the head is lower than the chest. using the heel of the hand, the rescuer should deliver 5 firm blows between the child’s shoulder blades. this action can help dislodge the object blocking the airway.

if the back blows do not clear the blockage, the rescuer should proceed with 5 chest compressions. the child should be turned face-up while still supported by the rescuer's arm and thigh. using two fingers placed at the center of the child’s chest (just below the nipple line), the rescuer should press down sharply up to a third of the chest's depth, performing the compressions at a steady rate.

these steps of 5 back blows followed by 5 chest compressions should be repeated until the object is expelled and the child begins to breathe normally, or until emergency medical personnel arrive. it is crucial to avoid blind finger sweeps, as they can push the object deeper into the throat, worsening the obstruction.

abdominal thrusts, also known as the heimlich maneuver, are not recommended for unconscious children due to the risk of causing internal injuries. this method is reserved for use in conscious children and adults who can stand or sit upright during the procedure. in cases where special equipment or procedures such as laryngoscopic removal are needed, these should only be performed by trained medical professionals in an appropriate medical setting.
