NHA Medical Administrative Assistant Certification - FAQ Sample Questions

Which of the following is NOT an action of the sympathetic nervous system?

Correct Answer:
decrease of respiration
the sympathetic nervous system (sns) is a part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls many of the body's involuntary functions. the primary role of the sns is to stimulate the body's "fight-or-flight" response during stressful or threatening situations. this response prepares the body to either confront the danger or escape from it.

the actions of the sympathetic nervous system are designed to increase the body’s alertness and metabolic rate, as well as to prepare the muscles for sudden exertion. when the sns is activated, it triggers several physiological changes: it increases heart rate, elevates blood pressure, and expands the airways to increase respiration. respiration must increase to meet the heightened demand for oxygen, which is necessary for increased muscle activity.

furthermore, the sympathetic nervous system stimulates the release of glucose from energy stores, providing an immediate energy source for the body to use. increased pulse and elevated blood pressure are other consequences, helping to ensure that oxygen and glucose are rapidly distributed to vital organs and muscles.

given these characteristics, the action described as a "decrease in respiration" does not align with the effects typically associated with the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. in fact, it would be counterproductive during a "fight or flight" response, as reduced respiration would limit oxygen intake, thereby impairing the body’s ability to perform vigorous physical activities. therefore, "decrease in respiration" is correctly identified as not an action of the sympathetic nervous system, contrary to the increases in pulse, blood pressure, and glucose release, which all support the body's preparedness for immediate physical action.
