International Association of Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (FORMERLY IAHCSMM) (HSPA)

The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (FORMERLY IAHCSMM) (HSPA) began certifying central service/sterile processing technicians in 1971. The exams are designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate the experience, knowledge, and skills necessary to provide competent services as a Central Service professional. Currently there are five certification areas available.

CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician)

The CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) exam is a three-hour computer-based test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. A 15-minute tutorial precedes the test and is also available online.

CHL (Certified Healthcare Leadership)

The CHL (Certified Healthcare Leadership) exam is a three-hour computer-based test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. A 15-minute tutorial precedes the test and is also available online.

Each certification area requires hands-on experience before certification is granted. A current CRCST certificate is required prior to taking both the CHL and the CIS exams. Specific requirements for each certification area along with the content and composition of each exam is available at https://www.IAHCSMM.org.

All exams are administered through Prometric Testing. Notification of passing the exam will occur when the exam is completed. A certification package will be mailed within 2 weeks of testing. 70% is the minimum score for passing all exams.
