The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC) is a non-profit organization in the United States that offers voluntary professional certification to individuals who qualify. They offer the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certifications.
Step 1: Eligibility and Application
To be eligible for the CHES exam, you must have a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Moreover, the degree should be in health education or a related discipline to health education. For MCHES, an active CHES certification and five years of documented experience in health education is required.
You must submit an application, along with the required documentation and fees, through the NCHEC website (https://www.nchec.org/). Once your application is approved, you are eligible to schedule your exam.
Step 2: Scheduling the Exam
Once your application is approved, you will receive instructions for scheduling your exam. The NCHEC partners with Prometric, a testing service company, to administer the exams. You can schedule your exam through Prometric's website (https://www.prometric.com/).
Exams are offered at Prometric test centers throughout the United States and around the world. You can choose the location that is most convenient for you.
Step 3: Taking the Exam
On the day of your scheduled exam, you should arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. You will need to bring a valid, government-issued photo ID with you. All other materials, including pencils and scratch paper, will be provided by the test center.
The exams are computer-based and consist of multiple-choice questions. The CHES exam has 165 questions while the MCHES exam has 165 core questions plus 30 advanced-level questions.
After you complete the exam, your results will be calculated immediately and you will receive a printed score report before you leave the test center.
