FTCE Exam & FTCE Certification Info

What are FTCE Exams?

Every teacher was once a student. Before they can graduate from the back of the classroom to the front, they must first demonstrate their pedagogical skills and content knowledge. There are a number of qualifying exams frequently required for new educators. The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations, or FTCE, are one such series of tests. Designed to gauge the classroom readiness of aspiring teachers, the tests are often required for licensure. In order to pass these challenging exams, you may want to study using FTCE practice tests . They are among the very best test prep tools anywhere.

Which FTCE Exam Should I Take?

Your career goals largely dictate which FTCE exam to take. The General Knowledge exams help qualify educators for general teaching licensure, but they focus solely on fundamentals like math, reading and writing. FTCE Subject Area Examinations, on the other hand, are more specific. If you have dreams of teaching Earth Science to middle or high school students, for instance, you may want to register for the FTCE Earth-Space Science 6-12 (008) exam. If you plan to focus your career on teaching art to students of all grades, you should probably register for the FTCE Art K-12 (001) exam. Different school districts have different requirements, so it helps to check with your academic advisor before undergoing FTCE registration.

How to Prepare for FTCE Exams

There are many different strategies to employ when deciding how to prepare for the FTCE. While notes, outlines and flashcards can be helpful during the study process, it's hard to know where to focus your efforts without first taking an FTCE practice exam. Your results can guide you on how to make the best use of your study time. By understanding which content areas you've already mastered, you can be more efficient in your test prep efforts.

What is FTCE?

The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) are a suite of standardized tests used by the state of Florida to ensure that teachers are qualified to teach in their preferred field. The exams are administered by the Florida Department of Education.

Step 1: Eligibility and Application

To apply for the FTCE, you must meet the eligibility requirements set by the Florida Department of Education. This usually involves having at least a bachelor's degree, and completing a state-approved teacher education program. Once you meet these requirements, you can apply for the exam by registering and paying the required fee on the FTCE website.

Step 2: Scheduling the Exam

After your application is approved, you can schedule your exam. This can be done via the FTCE website. There are numerous testing centers located throughout Florida, and you can choose the location and time that works best for you. You can also reschedule or cancel your exam through the website.

Step 3: Taking the Exam

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center with the required identification. The exam format and length can vary depending on the subject area, but most exams are multiple-choice and last about two hours. After the exam, your scores will be posted on the FTCE website.

Location Information and Website

The FTCE exams are administered at various locations throughout Florida. You can find a list of testing centers on the FTCE website (www.fl.nesinc.com). The website also provides further information about the exam, including study guides and practice tests.

How to register for the FTCE

To register for the FTCE exams, you'll need to create an account on the official FTCE website. Once logged in, you can begin the FTCE registration process. Simply select the test for which you plan to register and answer any questions asked about your educational background. After agreeing to the testing policies, you can then navigate to the section that features open registrations. Select the exam date of your choice and enter the payment and billing portal. Once you're registered, you'll have a full year to select the exam date you prefer.

How Does FTCE Scoring Work?

Most FTCE exams are based on scaled scores. This figure is calculated by taking your raw score – the number of questions you answered correctly – and converting it to a scaled score. This is done to ensure that multiple forms of the FTCE can have the same minimum score. Generally, you'll need a 200 or higher to pass each FTCE exam. When an exam features an essay section, you'll have the opportunity to earn up to 12 points. On those tests, you'll need to score at least an eight out of the possible 12 in order to pass. All FTCE exams are pass/fail. To understand how you'd fare if the test were today, consider taking an FTCE practice exam.

What is FTCE General Knowledge Test (GK)?

Designed to measure the content knowledge of aspiring educators, the FTCE General Knowledge exams are dedicated solely to math, reading and writing. Even if you don't plan to teach in these specific content areas, you'll likely still need to take and pass these exams. Since math, reading and writing are so foundational for other subjects, these tests are considered the baseline for new teachers in Florida. FTCE General Knowledge practice tests can help you determine how you'd fare on the exams if they were held today.

FTCE Retake Policy

The FTCE exams have a generous retake policy. Should you fail an exam, you'll have the opportunity to retake it as many times as you need. The downside to this policy? Expensive registration fees – and a lengthy waiting period. Initial FTCE registration costs $130. Subsequent retakes are $150 each. Examinees must wait 31 days between each retake, too. To make the most of your time and money, aim to pass the FTCE on your first attempt.

FTCE Waiting Period Requirements

Examinees must wait 31 calendar days before attempting a retake. This can seriously delay your teaching career. Given all that is riding on your score, it's important to pass on your first attempt. An FTCE practice exam can help you understand your chances of passing and highlight the content areas which warrant further study.
