Teaching Certification Exams in Florida

Teaching is still one of the most respected jobs in the country, and that is primarily because it's the bedrock of the future. The next generation's scientists, politicians, movers, and shakers, are all the phenomenal results of today's schoolteachers. Depending on the state in which you wish to teach, there are a variety of region-based certification exams that you might be required to pass. However, Florida teaching certification requires you to take the Florida Teaching Certification Examinations (FTCE).

Future Florida teachers must pass two types of certifications: the General Knowledge exam and the Subject Area exams. One tests your general knowledge of pedagogy and teaching requirements, while the other evaluates your knowledge and ability to teach the specific subject matter you specialize in. Whether you want to be a math teacher, elementary school teacher, or high school science teacher, you will have to pass these FTCEs in order to obtain your Florida teaching license. Other Florida teacher certification exams include the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE), some Praxis Subject Assessments, and some from the American Board of Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE).

How to Become a Teacher in Florida

Your teaching journey starts with getting the proper credentials and degrees. You'll need to enroll in an accredited university or college that offers a state-approved teaching program. These programs are known as Educator Preparation Institutes, and a full list of them can be found via the Florida Department of Education. Additionally, Florida has specific requirements for your coursework that you must meet in order to obtain Florida teaching certification.

As a leader in the online certification test preparation sphere, Exam Edge has all the tools you need to learn how to become a teacher in Florida. We offer a full range of tips and resources to help you prepare for the FTCE, and master in-depth strategies for passing subject matter examinations. The best way to prepare for all of your Florida teaching exams is to utilize our Florida teacher certification exam practice tests.

Florida Teacher Education Requirements

Like all states, Florida requires you to have at least a Bachelor's degree to become a teacher. In addition, Florida teaching requirements include taking the appropriate amount of semester hours in the appropriate subject matter for the area in which you wish to teach.

For example, you'll need to major in or take at least 30 semester hours of elementary education to become an elementary school teacher. The same is true for those who wish to specialize in secondary education.

Florida Teacher Testing Requirements

Prospective Florida teachers will have to take both a General Knowledge test (usually required at some point during your accredited teaching program, before graduation) and a subject area test. The exams are in-depth and cover both pedagogical theory and specific subject matter questions. For the General Knowledge test, you will need to show a basic understanding of reading, essay writing, mathematics, and English. Out of a total possible score of 300, you need to get at least a 200 on your FTCE tests in order to acquire your Florida teaching license.

Florida Teaching License Application Process

After taking the required coursework through an accredited program, the next step in the process to get your license is to register on the FTCE official website. You should be able to select a date and location to take the exam through that account. While the General Knowledge exam costs $130, the subject area test costs $200.

Given the cost and importance of these exams, it's crucial to prepare well so that you can pass the test the very first time. Exam Edge has practice exams for all teachers, including state-based tests, the Praxis tests, and more.

In Florida, you can qualify for a Temporary Educator's Certificate or a full Professional Florida Educator's Certificate. The requirements for the temporary version are:

  • Graduate with at least a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Pass a background check, including submission of your fingerprints
  • Pass your subject area examination after completing the required coursework for your program

The Professional FEC is a bit more involved. You must meet all the above requirements in addition to a few others. You must pass the Florida General Knowledge Test or the GRE revised General Knowledge Test in order to demonstrate your mastery of general teaching skills. This can also be done by performing two semesters of student teaching. Additionally, you must prove that you have Professional Education and Competence via approval from your school's educator program or another professional training regimen (such as the Professional Development Certification Program).

To apply for a teaching license, provided you have met all the criteria, you can fill out an application online or submit one to the following address:

Florida Department of Education
Bureau of Educator Certification
Room 201, Turlington Building
325 West Gaines St
Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0400

Why Take Florida Teaching Certification Exams?

You must take Florida teaching certification exams if you wish to become a licensed teacher in the state. Every state has its own requirements for licensure, and the FTCE tests encompass those requirements for Florida. Without at least a score of 200, you will be unable to pursue your dream of teaching.

Why use Exam Edge for your Florida Teacher Certifications

With Exam Edge online practice tests, youll find an almost exact replica of the real testing experience, with one important exception: we give you valuable feedback on why you got questions right or wrong. Our exams feature easy-to-understand explanations for each answer. This allows you to take extensive notes and build a customized study guide tailored to your precise study needs.

We know everybody studies a little differently, so we offer three different options for taking online practice tests:

Timed - If you're concerned about using your time wisely on exam day, youll want to take a timed practice test. They turn on the same pressure youll feel when you have to complete an exam during a strict time frame. This method defaults the test timing to the same time limit per question as you would have on the day of the actual exam. This is a great way to practice your pacing, particularly if you're worried about not having enough time to finish the test. Exam Edge exam prep can be as laid-back or as disciplined as you prefer!

No Time Limit - This option allows you the freedom to take your time and really ponder each question before responding. Rush-free online exam prep is a good idea for anyone just starting to prepare for an exam. Its the ideal way to test your existing knowledge while illuminating blind spots you may need to revisit in your studies.

Explanation - Unsure of how to kickstart your studies? A practice test in explanation mode can do wonders for your confidence. The questions serve as a study guide, giving you the freedom to see the answers as you take the practice test. Study guide mode is a great way to review the tests content before you take it in a more controlled format. Take notes as you go - its one of the best study methods for those just beginning to prepare.

Standardized tests gauge what you know. They also test your ability to perform under pressure. While its easy to psych yourself out about the entire test-taking process, confidence is often half the battle. By practicing the same set of skills youll use on the day of the real exam, youre sure to rise to the occasion. Examedge.com has everything you need to prepare. Dont take our word for it, though – look to our testimonials page for reviews from satisfied Exam Edge users!
