What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis Special Education: Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities - FAQ Sample Questions

What kind of instructional objectives should be covered in an IEP?

Correct Answer:
measurable objectives.

in the context of an individualized education program (iep), it is crucial to establish instructional objectives that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (smart). these objectives form the backbone of an iep, ensuring that educational goals are tailored to the individual student's needs, abilities, and potential for growth. general or future goals, while aspirational, do not provide the necessary detail and benchmarks needed for effective special education planning and assessment.

measurable objectives are essential in an iep for several reasons. firstly, they allow educators, students, and parents to clearly understand the expected outcomes of the educational process. this clarity is vital for maintaining transparency and setting realistic expectations. secondly, measurable objectives facilitate the tracking of a student's progress over time. by quantifying goals, teachers can more easily monitor advancements, setbacks, and areas needing additional support, thereby making informed decisions about instructional strategies and interventions.

moreover, measurable objectives in an iep enable accountability. when goals are defined in specific, quantifiable terms, it becomes possible to evaluate effectively whether the educational strategies employed are successful. this accountability is crucial not only for educational authorities but also for ensuring that the student receives the most appropriate and effective support. furthermore, having measurable goals allows for adjustments to be made to the iep as needed, based on the student’s progress and changing needs.

lastly, measurable objectives are aligned with the student's individual ability and potential growth rate. each student's iep is unique and personalized, taking into account their specific disabilities, strengths, and areas for improvement. by setting objectives that are achievable and tailored to the student’s current level, educators can foster an environment of success and motivation, encouraging continuous improvement and learning.

in conclusion, while general goals provide a broad direction, an iep must include measurable objectives to ensure practical, effective, and individualized educational planning. these objectives serve as critical tools for enhancing educational outcomes, ensuring compliance with educational standards, and supporting the overall development of students with special needs.

Boys are more likely to express emotions in what way?

Correct Answer:
with actions.

the question asks about the typical ways in which boys express their emotions compared to girls. the correct answer provided is "with actions." this response is based on general observations and studies in developmental psychology, which suggest that there are noticeable differences in how boys and girls typically express their emotions.

research in developmental and gender psychology has observed that boys and girls tend to exhibit different emotional expression patterns due to a combination of biological, social, and cultural factors. boys are often encouraged, both directly and indirectly, to express their emotions through actions rather than through verbal communication. this can include physical activities, such as playing sports, or through behaviors like acting out.

in contrast, girls are more frequently encouraged to express their feelings verbally. this encouragement can come from various socialization influences, including parents, educators, and media, which often reinforce the idea that girls should be more open with their feelings and articulate them through words.

these differences in emotional expression are not absolute and can vary widely among individuals. however, the tendency for boys to express emotions through actions rather than words is a recognized pattern that can be attributed to broader social and cultural norms. it is important to note that these patterns are general trends and there is significant overlap in how all children, regardless of gender, can express their emotions. understanding these tendencies allows for a better understanding of emotional development and can help in fostering effective communication and emotional support tailored to each individual's needs.
