What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 - FAQ Sample Questions

Jean Piaget created which of the following theories?

Correct Answer:
cognitive development theory.
jean piaget, a swiss developmental psychologist and philosopher, is renowned for his pioneering work in the field of developmental psychology. piaget's most notable contribution to psychology is his theory of cognitive development. this theory revolutionized the understanding of children's psychological growth.

according to piaget's cognitive development theory, children go through four distinct stages of cognitive growth: 1. **sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years)**: in this initial phase, infants learn about the world through their senses and actions, such as looking, touching, sucking, and grasping. during the sensorimotor stage, children develop an understanding of object permanence – realizing that objects continue to exist even when they are out of sight. 2. **preoperational stage (2 to 7 years)**: during this stage, children begin to think symbolically and learn to use words and pictures to represent objects. they also tend to be egocentric and struggle to see things from the perspective of others. while they are better at using language and thinking about things symbolically, their thinking still tends to be intuitive and not very logical. 3. **concrete operational stage (7 to 11 years)**: in the concrete operational stage, children start to think logically about concrete events. they gain a better understanding of the concept of conservation; the idea that quantity remains the same despite changes in shape or arrangement. during this stage, children also begin to understand the concept of reversibility. 4. **formal operational stage (12 years and up)**: the final stage of cognitive development, the formal operational stage, emerges in adolescence. during this period, the capacity for abstract thinking enables adolescents to reason about hypothetical problems, engage in systematic planning, and understand scientific reasoning.

piaget's theory emphasizes that children actively construct their understanding of the world and go through stages of cognitive development, which reflect the increasing sophistication of their thought processes. his contributions have had a profound influence on how we understand child development, affecting education, child psychology, and related fields.

besides the cognitive development theory, piaget is also associated with the constructivist theory of learning, which posits that learners construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. however, it is the detailed stage-based approach of his cognitive development theory that remains his most significant and influential legacy.

What is one disadvantage of using peer assessments?

Correct Answer:
students may not be willing to give feedback openly.

one notable disadvantage of using peer assessments is that students may not be willing to give feedback openly. this reluctance often stems from several psychological and social factors that affect the dynamics within a classroom setting.

firstly, fear of conflict and a desire to maintain peer relationships can deter students from giving honest feedback. in an academic environment, students often worry about the repercussions of their critique on their social bonds. the anxiety about potentially harming a friendship or being viewed negatively by classmates can lead students to withhold their true opinions, leading to less constructive and effective feedback.

secondly, lack of confidence in their own judgment can also prevent students from giving open feedback. they might feel unqualified or unsure about their ability to evaluate their peers' work accurately. this doubt, coupled with the fear of being judged for their assessments, can result in feedback that is either overly generalized or non-committal, which doesn't contribute effectively to the learning process.

moreover, the fear of receiving criticism can make students unwilling to engage in the peer assessment process. they might project their own apprehensions about being critiqued onto the act of giving feedback, preferring to avoid the process altogether rather than face potential criticism in return. this can diminish the effectiveness of peer assessments as a tool for mutual learning and improvement.

lastly, the educational setting itself can influence the willingness to give open feedback. if the classroom environment is not supportive or if the instructor does not foster an atmosphere of trust and respect, students may feel insecure about participating genuinely in peer assessments. the lack of a positive, encouraging environment can stifle the open exchange of ideas and feedback that is crucial for this type of assessment to be successful.

therefore, while peer assessments can be a powerful pedagogical tool, their success largely depends on the ability and willingness of students to provide honest and constructive feedback. educators must work to create a supportive classroom environment and address the aforementioned challenges to harness the full potential of peer assessments.
