What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis Library Media Specialist - FAQ Sample Questions

Mr. Timmons has given his sixth grade class an assignment for library class. They are to choose a fiction book which they have read that has a strong central character, explain how the character's actions influenced the plot and give a personal example from their own experience which connects with the character or his/her actions. They are to present their report orally in library class. Mr. Timmons' objective for this assignment is to encourage his students to read more fiction. How will this assignment accomplish his objective?

Correct Answer:
students share their reading experience with their peers.

mr. timmons' assignment for his sixth-grade class is strategically designed to not only enhance their reading habits but also to deepen their understanding and appreciation of literature. here’s how the assignment aligns with these objectives:

**encouraging active engagement with fiction:** by selecting a fiction book they have already read, students are revisiting and reflecting on their reading experience. the requirement to focus on a strong central character and the character’s influence on the plot compels students to engage critically with the text. this deeper analysis helps in understanding the nuances of storytelling and character development, which are essential skills in literary appreciation.

**developing oral communication skills:** the oral presentation aspect of the assignment serves multiple educational purposes. it not only helps in improving public speaking skills but also ensures that students are able to organize their thoughts, deliver them effectively, and defend their opinions in front of an audience. these are critical skills that will benefit them beyond the classroom.

**fostering a community of readers:** by sharing their experiences and insights in a communal setting like the library class, students contribute to a culture of reading among their peers. listening to presentations about different books introduces them to new stories and genres they might not have considered before, potentially expanding their literary interests.

**enhancing empathy and personal connection:** the assignment’s requirement to connect personal experiences with the character’s actions allows students to find relevance and emotional resonance in the stories they read. this personal connection can make the reading experience more profound and memorable, thereby increasing the likelihood that students will seek out similar experiences through reading more fiction.

**authentic learning experience:** the assignment mimics real-world tasks where individuals often need to analyze information, reflect on it, and present it to others. this authentic learning experience reinforces the relevance of their schoolwork to real-life scenarios, enhancing their engagement and motivation.

**understanding the role of characters:** through this assignment, students learn that characters are central to the plot and themes of a story. understanding a character’s motivations, actions, and growth throughout the story provides insights into human behavior and societal norms, which is a key aspect of literary studies.

overall, mr. timmons' assignment is thoughtfully designed to cultivate a love for reading through active participation, critical thinking, community building, and personal reflection. this comprehensive approach not only meets his objective of encouraging students to read more fiction but also equips them with skills and insights that are valuable both inside and outside the classroom.

Treasure the clerk that you hire.  These people are hard to find and your clerk's job description will depend on the grade level of your school and media program.  However, most media clerks perform several duties.  Which of the following is NOT one of those duties?

Correct Answer:
process and shelve books and audiovisual materials to the principal's specifications

the question revolves around understanding the typical duties of a media clerk in a school setting and identifying which listed duty is not typically part of their responsibilities. here's an expanded explanation of the correct answer and the reasoning behind it:

media clerks in schools are integral to the functioning of the school's media center or library. they are involved in a variety of tasks that support the educational process by ensuring that resources are available and accessible to both teachers and students. their duties usually include processing and shelving books and other audiovisual materials, operating and maintaining audiovisual equipment, supervising students, training student assistants, assisting with inventories, maintaining records, and performing clerical duties such as checking in magazines, filing catalogs, and assisting with displays.

among the listed duties, the correct answer to the question is: "process and shelve books and audiovisual materials to the principal's specifications." this duty is incorrectly assigned to a media clerk because typically, the processing and shelving of books and other materials are not done according to the principal's specifications, but rather according to standardized library or media center procedures. these standards ensure consistency, ease of access, and efficient management of resources, which are crucial for the functionality of the media center.

the principal's role in a school generally focuses on broader administrative responsibilities, including overall school management, policy implementation, and educational leadership, rather than the specific operational tasks within the media center. therefore, while the principal may have an overarching influence on the media program's goals and objectives, the detailed tasks such as how books are shelved or processed are usually overseen by the media specialist or librarian, who tailors these tasks to the specific needs and efficient functioning of the media center.

it is essential to recognize that clerks definitely process and shelve books and audiovisual materials; however, they should do so following a systematic approach determined by library science principles rather than ad hoc specifications from the principal. this approach helps maintain a standardized system that benefits all users of the media center, ensuring that materials are easy to locate, check out, and return, thereby supporting the educational mission of the institution.

the other duties listed in the options—helping teachers and students locate information, using the media management system to check in and out books, running overdue notices, learning to catalog, and helping with entering new books onto the database—are all typical responsibilities of a media clerk. these tasks underline the clerk’s role in supporting the educational activities by managing resources effectively and assisting the users of the media center.
