What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis School Counselor - FAQ Sample Questions

Flipped classrooms are new to the classroom scene, and has very little research completed on the effectiveness of the students' learning and development in these classrooms.  Which of the advantages listed below has not been attributed to flipped classrooms?

Correct Answer:
students are able to complete standardized testing, placing their scores in comparison with other students.
*

*the question asks which advantage has **not** been attributed to flipped classrooms from the list provided. flipped classrooms are a modern educational approach where traditional teaching methods are inverted. the basic premise of a flipped classroom is that instructional content (like lectures) is delivered outside of class time, typically online, and what used to be homework (problem-solving, exercises, practical applications) is now done in class with teacher support. *

*the advantages typically associated with flipped classrooms include: enhanced student-teacher interaction, improved communication, self-paced learning, and immediate feedback. these factors contribute to a more personalized learning experience, where students can engage with material at their own pace, review content as needed, and receive support and feedback during classroom time when they are working on applying the concepts. *

*one key advantage often highlighted is the self-paced nature of learning. students can access lecture materials and resources at any time which suits them, allowing for a more flexible learning environment. this is particularly beneficial for students who may need more time to understand complex subjects or for those who can progress faster through the material. *

*another significant advantage is the increased interaction and communication between students and teachers. with teachers spending less time lecturing during class and more time interacting, there is a greater opportunity for clarifying doubts, offering tailored support, and engaging in meaningful discussions. this often leads to a deeper understanding and better retention of the subject matter. *

*immediate feedback is also a notable benefit. in traditional classrooms, students may complete assignments or tests and wait days or even weeks for feedback. in a flipped classroom, feedback can be provided instantly during class activities. this immediate response allows students to learn from their mistakes and apply corrections directly, enhancing the learning process. *

*however, the statement that “flipped classrooms allow for standardized testing to compare students' comprehension” is not traditionally associated with the benefits of flipped classrooms. while flipped classrooms can certainly accommodate standardized tests, the model itself does not inherently enhance or focus on standardized testing capabilities. the flipped classroom model primarily enhances learning experiences through interactive, personalized, and immediate instructional methods, rather than emphasizing comparative or competitive testing formats. *

*therefore, the advantage listed in the question that has not been attributed to flipped classrooms is the ability to complete standardized testing to directly compare students' comprehension levels. this aspect is more a feature of traditional educational settings where standardized tests are often used to measure educational outcomes across a uniform metric.

One of the new learning theories being researched and used today is Connectivism.  It is more focused on the student's modern world, encompassing the opportunities of technology and the Internet.  Which of the statements listed below best represents this learning theory?

Correct Answer:
connectivism is focused on the fact that interactions and learning happen across different networks, online, with the instructor guiding the learning.
connectivism is a learning theory that acknowledges the role technology and networks play in understanding and acquiring knowledge. it is particularly relevant in today's digital age, where information is abundant and learning can occur via various tech-enabled avenues. the core tenets of connectivism involve recognizing that learning and knowledge extend beyond the individual and are distributed across networks of people, technology, and online resources.

to answer the question about which statement best represents connectivism, it's essential to focus on how this theory emphasizes the connectivity of information sources and the role of digital networks in learning. the statement that most aligns with this is: "connectivism is based on the students accessing the necessary information, through different technological sources, including the internet. this can occur in many ways, and does not need a huge budget from the school district. it focuses the instructor's energy on guiding the students in finding the information that they need to cover the information needed, and less in the presenting of the information to the students."

this statement encapsulates several critical aspects of connectivism: 1. **learner-centered approach**: it highlights that connectivism puts the learner at the center, empowering them to access and leverage a variety of information sources. this approach contrasts with traditional education models, which often focus more on the instructor delivering content directly. 2. **use of technology**: it acknowledges the importance of diverse technological tools and resources in learning, which is a hallmark of connectivism. the theory posits that learning can happen anytime and anywhere, facilitated by the internet and digital platforms. 3. **role of the instructor**: the statement also touches on the shifting role of educators in a connectivist framework. instead of primarily being sources of knowledge, instructors are guides who help learners navigate and make sense of information across networks. this reflects a significant transformation in teaching methodologies, aligning with modern educational needs.

therefore, understanding connectivism involves appreciating how it integrates technology with learning processes, promoting an interconnected and networked approach to education. this theory is especially pertinent in an era where information is rapidly evolving and readily accessible, requiring new strategies that empower learners to efficiently find and use knowledge.
