What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis School Librarian - FAQ Sample Questions

Which of the following is considered an advocacy program for a library media center?

Correct Answer:
the @ your library program.

the correct answer to the question regarding which program is considered an advocacy program for a library media center is "the @ your library program." this initiative stands out as a significant advocacy effort aimed at promoting and supporting libraries.

the @ your library program was developed by the american library association (ala), a key organization dedicated to the advancement and enhancement of library and information services. the program is part of the ala’s broader strategy to ensure that libraries continue to serve their communities effectively despite the challenges they face, such as budget cuts, technological changes, and shifting public perceptions about the relevance of libraries.

the primary goal of the @ your library program is to advocate for libraries and increase public awareness of the valuable resources and services that libraries offer. this includes support not only for traditional lending and reading facilities but also for modern media centers that provide access to digital resources, multimedia content, and internet services. by raising the profile of libraries in this way, the ala aims to stimulate increased usage and support from the community, policymakers, and stakeholders.

furthermore, the @ your library program provides libraries with tools and ideas to help them promote their services and advocate for their continued relevance in the digital age. this includes marketing materials, strategies for engaging with the community, and examples of best practices from successful libraries. the program also emphasizes the importance of libraries as essential centers for learning, cultural enrichment, and community engagement.

in contrast to other options listed in the question, such as amazon.com or the newberry medal, which are not directly related to library advocacy, the @ your library program is specifically designed to support and promote libraries. while the american library association (ala) itself is crucial for library advocacy, it is the specific @ your library program that is tailored for direct support and promotional efforts, making it the correct answer to the question.

All of the following would be considered authentic reading materials EXCEPT

Correct Answer:
textbooks.
authentic reading materials are defined as texts that people choose to read in real-world contexts because they are interested or because the materials serve a practical purpose. these materials are typically engaging and relevant to the reader's life, interests, or needs. examples of authentic reading materials include novels, magazines, newspapers, and comic books. these types of texts are often read for enjoyment, information, or entertainment.

novels, for instance, are a form of literary art that offers readers a chance to escape into different worlds, explore various human experiences, and enjoy storytelling. people often choose novels based on personal interest, genre preferences, or author loyalty, making them a classic example of authentic reading.

magazines cater to a wide range of interests—from fashion and lifestyle to science and technology. they are designed to be engaging and topical, providing readers with up-to-date information that appeals to specific hobbies, professional needs, or entertainment desires.

newspapers serve the purpose of informing the public about current events locally, nationally, and globally. they are a critical source of information for citizens wanting to stay informed about their world. the format of newspapers, including articles, editorials, and features, allows for a comprehensive understanding of news and issues.

comic books, while sometimes underestimated, are a unique blend of art and narrative that appeals to a wide audience. they combine visual storytelling with textual elements, making them an engaging medium that can cover a broad range of themes from fantasy to real-life issues.

in contrast, textbooks are not typically considered authentic reading materials. they are primarily educational tools used in academic settings, designed to teach specific content and skills in a structured format. textbooks are usually assigned rather than chosen, and they serve a specific educational purpose rather than personal enjoyment or leisure reading. although they are valuable for learning, they do not generally match the definition of authentic reading materials, which are characterized by voluntary and personal engagement with the text.

thus, among the options provided—novels, textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and comic books—the one that would not be classified as an authentic reading material is textbooks. this is because their primary function is educational and not necessarily for personal enjoyment or interest, contrasting with the other types of reading materials listed, which people often read voluntarily and for pleasure or personal interest.
