How do I register for the real Ohio Assessments for Educators?

For up-to-date information about registration for the Ohio Assessments for Educators, refer to the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

What are the OAE exams?

You are nearing the end of your journey to become an educator in the state of Ohio and know the OAEs are approaching. Exactly what are the OAEs all about?

The Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) are required for candidates seeking initial Ohio educator licensure or who are adding a new licensure area. The OAEs are aligned with Ohio Academic Content Standards and Common Core State Standards.

The testing requirements are dependent on the licensure type and include at least one test assessing content knowledge and one test of professional (pedagogical) knowledge which is level-specific. (See www.oh.nesinc.com to find the specific assessments required.) Content knowledge assessments range from 2 to 4 ¼ hours for 100 to 150 multiple-choice items. While the exams are largely computer-based, a few content area tests include constructed-response items. The professional knowledge assessments are also computer-based and contain 100 multiple-choice questions, one case study written assignment, and one work product written assignment. Three hours are allotted for these exams.

Scores for the OAEs are scaled from 100 to 300 with 220 being the minimum passing score. Score reports can be emailed if it is requested upon registration. Otherwise the score report will be available in your account on a specified date dependent on the date the assessment was taken.

OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12) - FAQ Sample Questions

A student-centered style of instruction in which students learn about a subject through problem solving is known as which of the following?

Correct Answer:
problem-based learning.

problem-based learning (pbl) is an educational approach rooted in constructivism, a theory that suggests learning is more effective when students construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. this method emphasizes the role of the student as an active participant in their own learning process, rather than passive recipients of information.

in pbl, students are presented with a problem to solve, rather than direct instruction on the subject matter. this problem is typically complex, not having a straightforward or predetermined answer. the role of the teacher in this setting shifts from that of a knowledge provider to a facilitator or guide. this involves helping students to develop problem-solving skills and knowledge as they work collaboratively in small groups to resolve the problem at hand.

the problems used in pbl are designed to mirror real-world issues, making the learning context more relevant and engaging for students. this engagement is crucial as it motivates students to delve into inquiry and research, driving them to seek out and apply knowledge themselves. through this process, students develop critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills, which are essential for success in professional and personal settings.

another key aspect of pbl is its iterative nature. students often revise their understanding of a problem and improve their approaches as they gather more information and receive feedback from peers and facilitators. this reflection and adaptation process is integral to deep learning and helps students develop resilience and persistence in the face of challenging tasks.

overall, problem-based learning not only helps students acquire subject-specific knowledge but also fosters a suite of valuable higher-order thinking skills. by emphasizing learning through doing, pbl prepares students for lifelong learning and effective problem-solving in complex, real-world situations.

According to Gardner, the ability to understand one's own feeling and emotions is known as which of the following?

Correct Answer:
intrapersonal intelligence.

according to howard gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, the ability to understand and be aware of one's own feelings and emotions is defined as "intrapersonal intelligence." this is distinct from "interpersonal intelligence," which pertains to the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. intrapersonal intelligence involves a high level of self-awareness, including the recognition of one’s own emotions, motivations, inner states, and self-reflection. it plays a crucial role in how individuals manage their emotions and how they direct their behavior based on their understanding of themselves.

gardner introduced the concept of multiple intelligences in his 1983 book "frames of mind," where he outlined initially seven intelligences, later expanding the list. each intelligence represents different ways of processing information and learning. intrapersonal intelligence is one of these, and it is often associated with introspective and reflective capacities. people with strong intrapersonal intelligence are typically very self-aware and capable of analyzing their own emotions and thoughts. they often have a deep understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and are adept at setting personal goals and monitoring their own motivation and progress.

in educational settings, understanding a student's intrapersonal intelligence can be crucial for fostering an environment where they can excel. students strong in this area might prefer individualized learning experiences and activities that allow them to work alone or involve self-paced learning. they often excel in projects that require deep thought and self-reflection, such as journaling, theoretical work, or creative endeavors that require a strong sense of personal vision and discipline.

in contrast, emotional intelligence, although related, is a broader concept that involves not only the recognition of one’s own emotions but also the emotions of others. it encompasses the ability to regulate emotions, develop empathy, and navigate social networks effectively. while intrapersonal intelligence is a component of emotional intelligence, it specifically refers to the internal processing of emotions and self-knowledge.

understanding these distinctions is crucial not only in educational contexts but also in personal and professional development. recognizing and nurturing intrapersonal intelligence can lead to better personal decisions, greater self-regulation, and more effective goal-setting, all of which are important for personal satisfaction and success in a wide range of activities.
