How do I register for the real Ohio Assessments for Educators?

For up-to-date information about registration for the Ohio Assessments for Educators, refer to the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

What are the OAE exams?

You are nearing the end of your journey to become an educator in the state of Ohio and know the OAEs are approaching. Exactly what are the OAEs all about?

The Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) are required for candidates seeking initial Ohio educator licensure or who are adding a new licensure area. The OAEs are aligned with Ohio Academic Content Standards and Common Core State Standards.

The testing requirements are dependent on the licensure type and include at least one test assessing content knowledge and one test of professional (pedagogical) knowledge which is level-specific. (See www.oh.nesinc.com to find the specific assessments required.) Content knowledge assessments range from 2 to 4 ¼ hours for 100 to 150 multiple-choice items. While the exams are largely computer-based, a few content area tests include constructed-response items. The professional knowledge assessments are also computer-based and contain 100 multiple-choice questions, one case study written assignment, and one work product written assignment. Three hours are allotted for these exams.

Scores for the OAEs are scaled from 100 to 300 with 220 being the minimum passing score. Score reports can be emailed if it is requested upon registration. Otherwise the score report will be available in your account on a specified date dependent on the date the assessment was taken.

OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12) - FAQ Sample Questions

The teacher is researching barriers to communication. She found noise can be a major issue when communicating. She learned that the noise coming from outside of the classroom when speaking to parents is what form of noise?

Correct Answer:
this is a form of physical noise.

the correct answer to the question regarding the type of noise coming from outside of the classroom is that it is a form of physical noise. in communication, physical noise refers to any external environmental stimuli that cause a disruption in the transmission of the message between the sender and the receiver. examples of physical noise include the sounds of construction, traffic, or other people talking nearby.

there are a variety of barriers to communication that can occur in the classroom, and noise is one significant type. to further understand noise as a barrier, it is categorized into four types: physical, psychological, written, and visual. physical noise, as previously mentioned, involves disturbances from the external environment. psychological noise refers to internal factors within a person, such as preconceptions, biases, or emotional states, that can distort message interpretation. written noise could include poor handwriting or grammar issues that hinder the clarity of written communication. lastly, visual noise involves any visual distractions that can detract from the communication process.

given this categorization, the noise issue identified by the teacher, which originates from outside the classroom, is specifically categorized as physical noise. this type of noise is tangible and external, making it distinct from the other types of noise that may involve more subjective or internal interferences. recognizing and addressing this kind of noise is crucial for effective communication, especially in a setting like a classroom where clarity and focus are essential for learning and engagement.

A main difference between accommodation and assimilation is that with accommodation the child:

Correct Answer:
modifies an existing schema.

the concepts of accommodation and assimilation are critical in understanding cognitive development, particularly as articulated by jean piaget, a renowned developmental psychologist. these processes describe how children integrate new information into their pre-existing cognitive frameworks known as schemas. understanding the difference between these two processes is key to understanding how children learn and adapt to new information.

assimilation occurs when a child encounters new information and integrates this information into an existing schema without changing the schema. this process involves fitting new experiences into pre-existing ways of understanding the world. for example, if a child knows the schema for dogs and sees a small cat, they might initially call it a dog because it fits their existing schema of a four-legged animal.

accommodation, on the other hand, involves changing the existing schema in order to fit in new information when the old schema does not work anymore. this adjustment is necessary when the new information is so different that the existing schema cannot adequately encompass it, requiring the schema to be modified or expanded. for instance, using the previous example, if the child is corrected and learns that the small animal is not a dog but a cat, they might modify their schema of four-legged animals to include both dogs and cats as distinct categories.

therefore, a main difference between accommodation and assimilation is that with accommodation, the child must alter or expand their existing schema to incorporate new experiences or information, whereas with assimilation, the existing schema remains unchanged as new experiences are simply added under its umbrella. in the context of the question provided, the correct answer would be that accommodation involves modifying an existing schema to integrate new information, reflecting a deeper and more transformative process of learning compared to assimilation.
