What are the MTEL exams?

You are nearing the end of your journey to become an educator in the state of Massachusetts and know the MTELs are approaching.

What are the MTELs all about?

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTELs) are designed to ensure that prospective education professionals possess the communication skills and subject matter knowledge necessary to fulfill the responsibilities in their role as a public educator. Licensure requires a candidate to achieve a passing score in both subtests of the Communication and Literacy Skills test as well as any relevant Academic PreK-12 subject matter test(s).

The MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills test is a computer-based test that includes two subtests, Reading and Writing. The Reading subtest consists of 42 multiple-choice questions. The Writing subtest contains 35 multiple-choice questions, 7 short-answer items and 2 open-response exercises, a summary and a composition. Four hours are allotted for one or both subtests with an additional 15 minutes given for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. The minimum qualifying score for each subtest is a scaled score of 240. The multiple-choice and short-answer portions of the Writing subtest make up 50% of the total score, while the summary counts for 15% and the composition, 35%.

Except for the General Curriculum test and the Vocational Technical Literacy Skills test, the MTEL Academic PreK-12 subject matter exams consist of 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response items in a 4-hour testing session. An additional 15 minutes are given for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. The open-response exercises make up 20% of the total test score. The minimum qualifying score for each subject matter exam is a scaled score of 240. The General Curriculum exam has 2 subtests: math and multi-subjects. The math subtest has 45 multiple-choice and 1 open-response item; the multi-subject subtest contains 55 multiple-choice and 1 open-response exercise. Four hours are allowed for one or both subtests along with an additional 15 minutes given for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. The Vocational Technical Literacy Skills exam also contains 2 subtests: reading (60 multiple-choice items) and writing (40 multiple-choice and 2 open-response). Four hours are allowed for one or both subtests along with an additional 15 minutes given for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. An overview of specific content and test objectives for all exams can be found at www.mtel.nesinc.com.

Score report dates are listed on the MTEL website. This report includes whether a candidate received a qualifying score along with a general performance report on each subarea or section of the test. Scores can be emailed if requested.
