You’ve decided that education is for you. Congratulations! The next step is the GACE. Exactly what is the GACE all about?
The Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) is the state-approved education certification assessment program. These computer-based tests are developed by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) and are administered at an Educational Testing Service (ETS) center. This battery of tests helps ensure that prospective candidates possess the knowledge and skills required to perform the responsibilities of an educator in Georgia’s public school system. Candidates take the GACE for admission to teacher preparation programs, to receive certification, or to become highly qualified in a core academic subject area.
The GACE Program Admission exam, formerly the GACE Basic Skills test, is taken by the end of a candidate’s freshman year. It, or an exemption, is required prior to being admitted to a teacher education program. It consists of 3 tests: reading, mathematics, and writing. These tests can be taken individually or all at once. The Reading test, an 85-minute test consisting of self-selected response items, evaluates comprehension at a college level. The Mathematics portion is an 85-minute test consisting of self-selected response items measuring problem solving and computational ability in the domains of number and quantity, algebra and functions, geometry, and statistics and probability. A calculator is provided. The Program Admission writing exam includes multiple choice items dealing with grammar, revision, mechanics, word choice, and research. This 100-minute test also includes 2 constructed-response assignments. Four hours and 30 minutes are allotted when taking all three at the same time.
The GACE Content Tests quantify knowledge and skills in specific certification areas. These content exams can be taken at an induction level (for initial certification) or at the professional level (for becoming highly qualified). The content tests can be one or two tests made up of selected-response questions with some containing one or more constructed response items. More specific information is available on the GACE website at Gace Exams.
Scores will be available at the conclusion of your exam if the test was only self-selected response items. Constructed-response items are scored immediately after the test window closes and will become available online at your ETS GACE testing account. The final score report will include a pass/not pass determination along with an analysis of your performance across objectives. All scores are scaled with the passing standard for the Program Admission test being 250. For the content area tests, 220 is the minimum passing score at the induction level, and 250 is the minimum passing score at the professional level.
