Exam Edge Practice Tests for Georgia Teacher Certification Exams

Teaching Certification Exams in Georgia

Becoming a teacher in Georgia requires getting your Georgia teacher certification. This is done by completing the GACE exams (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators). While the Praxis exams might qualify you for licensure in specific areas like audiology or speech-language pathology, most teaching positions in the state require the GACE assessments instead.

Exam Edge is a leader in online test preparation, and we have the resources to help you pass your GACE exam. Whether you need blog posts about Georgia teacher certification tips, study techniques, or practice exams to become more familiar with GACE question formats, we have what you need.

How to Become a Teacher in Georgia

The process for how to become a teacher in GA involves two main components: your educational requirements and your testing requirements. The former includes all the criteria that must be met by your teaching preparation program (usually within an accredited college or university), while the latter includes the requirements related to exam and test scores. Without both aspects, you cannot become a teacher in Georgia.

Georgia Teacher Education Requirements

Let's start with the education criteria. You must complete either a state-approved teaching program within a Georgia accredited university or college, or an out-of-state institution. If you complete your education in an out-of-state institution, you can usually begin a job as a teacher in Georgia. However, out-of-state teachers must also complete additional Georgia-specific requirements such as special education coursework and fulfillment of ethical conduct standards.

All told, you must graduate from a teaching program with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in order to meet the Georgia teaching requirements. You must also perform student teaching hours, but these criteria are usually folded into the requirements for passing your teaching program in college.

Georgia Teacher Testing Requirements

Now comes the testing criteria. In order to obtain your Georgia teaching license, you'll need to pass two levels of testing. The first is called the GACE Basic Skills test, and you must get at least a score of 220 in each section. However, this requirement can be bypassed if you have achieved high scores on comparable other exams, such as the Praxis I, GRE, SAT, or other state teacher certification examinations (like Florida's FTCE). This first test covers your comprehension of basic skills like math, reading, and writing as well as some familiarity with pedagogy.

The second exam, or GACE Content Assessment, is more finely honed in on the specific coursework you plan to teach. These assessments range from tests designed for teaching Birth Through Kindergarten all the way to individual subjects in Secondary Education. Designed to ensure that teachers are highly qualified in their subject area, GACE Content Assessments are now required for all teachers, as the Praxis II exams used in many other states are no longer accepted since 2008.

Georgia Teaching License Application Process

Getting your Georgia teacher certification or your license is a long process that culminates with applying for Georgia Prospective Educator Certification. You might also hear this called the Clear Renewable License, as it indicates that you have cleared all requirements for teaching within the state. To submit an application, go to the above link and ensure that you include the following information:

  1. Official college transcripts showing your GPA and the receipt of at least a bachelor's degree
  2. A signed Approved Program Recommendation Form from faculty at the program from which you graduated
  3. Any additional teaching certification you have received in other states

Though the state only requires you to submit fingerprints for a background check if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, you likely will need to undergo a background check once you are hired by a place of learning.
