The ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) exam is designed to evaluate the entry-level clinical knowledge and skills of nurse practitioners. This exam has undergone updates to its blueprint, which took effect on September 28, 2022. The changes are part of the ANCC's regular revision process, which occurs every 3 to 5 years, to ensure the exam remains relevant with the latest standards in nursing.

The exam now includes five content domains, reflecting the components of the nurse practitioner role:

  • Assessment: This domain focuses on the knowledge of evidence-based population health promotion and screening.
  • Diagnosis: This area tests knowledge of the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of disease states.
  • Planning: Reflects knowledge of age-appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention; anticipatory guidance; evidence-based clinical guidelines; standards of care; and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Implementation: Tests knowledge of legal and ethical implementations for healthcare and technology; nonpharmacologic intervention and treatment selection; pharmacotherapeutic intervention selection; regulatory guidelines; and APRN scope and standards.
  • Evaluation: Tests knowledge of ethical and legal principles and issues for patients, populations, and systems; nonpharmacologic intervention and treatment outcomes; and pharmacotherapeutic intervention and treatment outcomes.

These domains cover a wide range of topics, including various body systems like cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and many others, as well as drug agents ranging from analgesic to anti-infective, cardiovascular, and more. The exam format consists of 175 questions, with 150 being scored and 25 as pretest questions that do not count towards the final score. The breakdown of questions by domain includes specific numbers for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation, reflecting the proportion of each domain's content in the exam.
