CLEP Mathematics Sample Test

A particle moves in a straight line where displacement from origin in meters is given by the function

s(t) = 4t - t3. Find the average velocity of the particle in the time interval from t = 1 to 3 seconds.

the correct answer is:
-9

the average velocity is the net distance traveled in a certain amount of time divided by the amount of time.

given that s(t) = 4t - t
3

first calculate the net distance from s(1) to s(3)

s(1) = 4(1) - 13= 4-1 = 3

s(3) = 4(3) - 33 = 12 - 27 = -15

the net distance is s(3) - s(1) =  -15 - 3 = -18

now divide by the amount of time (3 - 1 = 2) to find the average velocity:

average velocity = (s(3)-s(1))/(3-1) = (-15 - 3)/2 = -18/2 = -9 m/s
