How do I register for the real Ohio Assessments for Educators?

For up-to-date information about registration for the Ohio Assessments for Educators, refer to the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

What are the OAE exams?

You are nearing the end of your journey to become an educator in the state of Ohio and know the OAEs are approaching. Exactly what are the OAEs all about?

The Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) are required for candidates seeking initial Ohio educator licensure or who are adding a new licensure area. The OAEs are aligned with Ohio Academic Content Standards and Common Core State Standards.

The testing requirements are dependent on the licensure type and include at least one test assessing content knowledge and one test of professional (pedagogical) knowledge which is level-specific. (See www.oh.nesinc.com to find the specific assessments required.) Content knowledge assessments range from 2 to 4 ¼ hours for 100 to 150 multiple-choice items. While the exams are largely computer-based, a few content area tests include constructed-response items. The professional knowledge assessments are also computer-based and contain 100 multiple-choice questions, one case study written assignment, and one work product written assignment. Three hours are allotted for these exams.

Scores for the OAEs are scaled from 100 to 300 with 220 being the minimum passing score. Score reports can be emailed if it is requested upon registration. Otherwise the score report will be available in your account on a specified date dependent on the date the assessment was taken.

OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Early Childhood (PK-3) - FAQ Sample Questions

Mrs. Stoner begins her unit on the geological formations of the earth by having her students work together in groups on a KWHL chart. They list what they know about the earth's formations and what they want to find out. They also list sources they might explore to find the answers to their questions. Which of the following theories of motivation is best represented with this exercise?

the correct answer is:
david ausubel's advance organizer theory

david ausubel advocates "advanced organizers."  these help to prepare a student's mind for instruction.  these can be verbal or visual.  ausubel suggests that new information is more easily acquired when it is linked to previously learned experiences or knowledge.  teachers should help students focus on the most important concepts to be learned.  an advance organizer is introduced before learning begins.  some advance organizers are kwl charts, concept maps, and semantic webs. albert bandura suggested observational learning or modeling.  lee canter introduced "assertive discipline."  teachers must clearly state expectations and school rules and follow through. students follow the rules or face consequences.  these are also clearly delineated.  william glasser's theory was the "choice theory" or the "control theory." he proposed that teachers should focus on students' behavior, not the students, teachers use classroom meetings to change behaviors. students have a say in rules, curriculum, and classroom environment.  this gives them a greater sense of ownership and promotes intrinsic motivation for learning and behavior.

A teacher is going over the theory of psychosexual development.  She wants to better familiarize herself with the stages that children go through. She is currently looking at the second stage. The second stage of the theory is:

Correct Answer:
the second stage is known as the anal stage in this theory.

the correct answer is that the second stage of sigmund freud's theory of psychosexual development is known as the anal stage. freud, a pioneering figure in psychology, developed this framework to describe how personality develops through various childhood stages. each stage is associated with a particular erogenous zone that is the focus of a child's psychosexual energy.

the first stage of freud's theory is the oral stage, occurring from birth to about 18 months, where pleasure centers on the mouth. following this, the anal stage occurs roughly between the ages of 18 months to three years. during the anal stage, the focus of the libido (sexual energy) shifts to the anus, and children derive pleasure from controlling bladder and bowel movements. this stage is crucial for developing habits related to order and control, which can later manifest in personality traits such as cleanliness, orderliness, or their opposites.

after the anal stage, the child enters the phallic stage around the age of three, where the libido centers on the genital area. this stage involves the complex dynamics of the oedipus and electra complexes. the subsequent stages are the latent period, where sexual impulses are subdued, and finally, the genital stage that emerges in puberty, where sexual maturity is reached, and sexual energies focus on the genitals once again.

understanding these stages, as freud proposed, helps in analyzing the psychological development of individuals and the roots of their adult behavior and personality traits. the theory, while controversial and widely debated, remains a significant historical milestone in the field of psychology.
