The phases of the moon are the sequential changes in the appearance of the moon, which are called

Correct Answer:
lunar phases
the correct answer is "lunar phases." the phases of the moon, known as lunar phases, are the different ways the moon appears from earth over about a month.

the reason we see these phases is due to the moon's orbit around the earth, and the position of the moon relative to both the earth and the sun. as the moon travels around earth, different portions of its surface are illuminated by the sun, leading to the various phases.

the cycle starts with the new moon, when the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun, with the sunlit side of the moon facing away from earth, rendering it invisible to us. following the new moon, the moon appears to grow (or wax) gradually into a crescent shape. this waxing continues through the first quarter phase, where half of the moon's surface visible from earth is illuminated, into a waxing gibbous moon.

the moon reaches full illumination during the full moon phase, where the completely lit side of the moon is fully visible from earth. this occurs when earth lies directly between the sun and the moon. after the full moon, the moon begins to wane, meaning the illuminated portion visible from earth starts to decrease. it transitions into a waning gibbous moon, then to the third quarter phase (where again, half of the moon's surface visible from earth is illuminated, but the opposite half from the first quarter), and finally to a waning crescent.

the cycle concludes as the moon returns to the new moon phase, and the whole cycle, roughly 29.5 days long, repeats. each phase of the moon has its own unique characteristics and is part of the continuous and predictable rhythms of the natural world, driven primarily by the gravitational forces and relative positions of the earth, moon, and sun.
