Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians - FAQ Sample Questions

The directions for mixing a liquid antibiotic state when 300 mL of water are added to the contents of the bottle, the resulting volume is 700 mL. What is the powder volume?

Correct Answer:
400 ml

the problem requires determining the initial volume of powder in a bottle before water is added. the given information states that when 300 ml of water (the diluent) is added to the powder in the bottle, the total volume of the mixture becomes 700 ml.

to find the volume of the powder, we can use the formula: \[ \text{final volume} = \text{volume of diluent} + \text{powder volume} \] here, the final volume after adding the water is 700 ml, and the volume of the diluent (water added) is 300 ml. plugging these values into the formula gives: \[ 700 \text{ ml} = 300 \text{ ml} + \text{powder volume} \]

to isolate the powder volume, subtract the volume of the diluent from both sides of the equation: \[ 700 \text{ ml} - 300 \text{ ml} = \text{powder volume} \] \[ 400 \text{ ml} = \text{powder volume} \]

thus, the volume of the powder before any water was added is 400 ml. this calculation shows that the bottle contained 400 ml of powder initially, which when combined with 300 ml of water, resulted in a total mixture volume of 700 ml.
