How do I register for the real Dental Assisting National Board?

For up-to-date information about registration for the Dental Assisting National Board, refer to the Dental Assisting National Board website.

What are the DANB exams?

Congratulations on your decision to pursue certification in dental assisting! The DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) exams are your next hurdle. Exactly what can you expect with the DANB exams?

What is the Dental Assisting National Board (DANDB)?

The DANB exams are based on content validation, an analysis of the duties commonly performed in actual dental assisting practice. DANB offers five different certifications: NELDA (National Entry Level Dental Assistant, CDA (Certified Dental Assistant), COA (Certified Orthodontic Assistant), CPFDA (Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant, and CRFDA (Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant).

The DANB component exams are administered on computer at Pearson VUE test centers. All exams are multiple-choice format containing from 80 questions to 210 questions depending on the exam. The time allotted also varies from test to test with a range of 60 minutes to 165 minutes. Specific information on each of exams, including registration information, exam outlines with topics covered, and reference materials can be found at www.danb.org.

Most DANB exams use computer adaptive testing (CAT). CAT adapts to the examinee’s ability level and customizes the exam for a more accurate measurement. Each exam begins with a question on par with the passing standard. If it is answered correctly, the difficulty level increases. If answered incorrectly the level of difficulty becomes easier. The final score is based on the difficulty of the questions that were presented and passed.

Official exam results and certificates will be mailed within 2 to 3 weeks after the exam. Candidates can verify DANB credentials using the online Credential Verification tool.

DANB's Infection Control - FAQ Sample Questions

A clinic in a busy downtown area has a significant number of patients who smoke and have oral complications due to smoking. The lead assistant decides she would like to obtain patient education literature to encourage smoking cessation. For material, she can contact all of the following except:

Correct Answer:
office of management and budget.
to provide clarity on where to source patient education material for smoking cessation, let's break down why the office of management and budget (omb) is not a suitable contact for this purpose, unlike other organizations mentioned.

the american cancer society, the national cancer institute, and the us surgeon general's office are organizations directly involved in health promotion and public health education. these entities often produce and distribute materials aimed at educating the public about various health issues, including the dangers of smoking and the benefits of cessation. these materials are typically designed to be accessible and helpful to patients, offering guidance and support for those looking to quit smoking.

the american cancer society, for example, not only funds and conducts cancer research but also works on prevention strategies and provides support to individuals affected by cancer, which includes programs and literature on smoking cessation. similarly, the national cancer institute, as part of the national institutes of health, conducts and supports research and disseminates information about cancer prevention and treatments, including risks associated with smoking.

the us surgeon general has historically played a significant role in public health education campaigns. reports from the surgeon general on the health consequences of smoking have been pivotal in shaping public policy and public opinion on tobacco use. the office may provide literature and guidelines that can be very useful in a clinical setting to motivate patients to quit smoking.

on the other hand, the office of management and budget (omb) is tasked with producing the president’s budget, reviewing the practices of agencies, and ensuring compliance with financial management policies. the primary focus of omb is budgetary concerns and the management of federal funds, not health education. they do not create or distribute health education materials, as their roles do not encompass public health promotion or patient education.

given this context, for a clinic assistant seeking educational materials to aid in smoking cessation efforts, contacting the omb would be ineffective. instead, reaching out to organizations like the american cancer society, the national cancer institute, or the us surgeon general's office would be much more appropriate and fruitful. these organizations have the expertise, resources, and mandate to provide the necessary information and support to help patients quit smoking.
