Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is a non-profit organization that provides certification for pharmacy technicians. PTCB is recognized by many employers and state boards of pharmacy as the gold standard for pharmacy technician certification.

PTCB Certification Exam

The PTCB offers a certification exam, known as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), which tests knowledge that is critical to the role of a pharmacy technician. Candidates who pass the PTCE receive the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification.

Step 1: Eligibility and Application

Before you can take the PTCE, you must meet certain eligibility requirements. These include a high school diploma or equivalent, full disclosure of all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions, and compliance with all PTCB certification policies. You can apply for the PTCE through the PTCB website.

Step 2: Scheduling the Exam

Once your application is accepted, you will receive an email from PTCB with instructions on how to schedule your exam. The PTCE is administered year-round at over 1,400 Pearson VUE test centers nationwide, including in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.

Step 3: Taking the Exam

The PTCE is a computer-based exam consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions. The exam is two hours long and is administered at Pearson VUE test centers. You will receive your score immediately upon completion of the exam.
