SHRM SCP exam questions come in two types: knowledge items and situational judgment items.Knowledge items are multiple-choice questions that fall into two categories. The first assesses fundamental concepts as they relate to the 15 HR functional areas. The second category assesses key topics related to the eight behavioral competencies.
Situational judgment items are also multiple-choice, but they differ from knowledge items because they require an application of decision-making skills and judgment. These SHRM SCP certification questions cover three topics: leadership, business, and interpersonal relationships. These questions describe a scenario and provide multiple solution strategies from which to choose.

You can break down the SHRM SCP exam scoring in two ways: by question type and by topic. By question type, the scoring breakdown is 50% knowledge items, 10% foundational knowledge items, and 40% situational judgment.
When broken down by topic, SHRM SCP exam questions are 50% behavioral competency and 50% HR domain knowledge. There are 160 questions, and 120 questions count toward your score. 30 field test questions do not count toward your score.
The range of scores for the SHRM SCP exam is 120-200. To pass the exam, candidates must earn a score of 200. A passing score does not mean you must earn a perfect score— candidates can earn higher than 200, but these scores are not reported.

The SHRM-CP measures the level of competency and knowledge expected of early to mid-level HR professionals. The SHRM-SCP measures the level of competency and knowledge of a senior level HR professional. Both exams are computer-based. Four hours are allotted for the 160 multiple-choice questions. About 60% of the questions involve HR-specific knowledge with the other 40% being scenario-based in which application and decision-making skills are assessed. Credit is given for correct answers only. While more than one answer might address an issue presented in the situational judgment portion, only the best possible response will be awarded credit for being correct. The exams both include 30 field-test questions that do not count toward your score. A provisional pass/did not pass result is issued before leaving the testing center.
