You're ready to take the next step in your building safety career and earn an International Code Council (ICC) certification. Whether you're pursuing your first credential or adding another certification to expand your expertise, understanding the ICC certification process is an important first step.
The International Code Council (ICC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing model building codes and standards that help protect public health, safety, and welfare. The ICC publishes the International Codes (I-Codes), which are widely adopted by states, municipalities, and jurisdictions throughout the United States and around the world. In addition to developing building codes, the ICC provides professional certification programs for inspectors, plans examiners, permit technicians, code enforcement officers, fire inspectors, and many other building safety professionals.
ICC certification exams are designed to objectively measure the knowledge and skills required to perform specific building safety roles. Depending on the certification, exams evaluate a candidate's ability to interpret and apply building codes, perform inspections, review construction documents, enforce code requirements, and make sound professional decisions in real-world situations.
Most ICC certification exams are computer-based and consist primarily of multiple-choice questions. Many exams are open-book, allowing candidates to use approved code references during testing. However, success depends less on simply having the code book available and more on understanding how to quickly locate and correctly apply code provisions. Exam length, number of questions, allowed reference materials, and passing scores vary by certification. Candidates should always review the official exam bulletin for the certification they intend to take before scheduling their exam.
ICC certification exams are available through the ICC Assessment Center. Many certifications can be taken at authorized testing centers or through secure online remote proctoring, providing candidates with flexible scheduling options.
