About the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors
The Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI) supports the home inspection profession by providing high-stakes examinations and trusted professional resources.
EBPHI serves the public interest by establishing a standard of competence for home inspectors. It governs and administers the National Home Inspector Examination®, helping states identify the level of knowledge and skill required to perform quality home inspections.
The Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI) is an independent, non-profit organization that is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE). This examination is used to assess the knowledge and competency of professional home inspectors.
Step 1: Eligibility and Application
Before you can take the NHIE, you must meet certain eligibility requirements. These requirements vary by state, but generally include a minimum level of education and/or experience in home inspection. To apply, you must complete an application form and pay a fee. The application form is available on the EBPHI website.
Step 2: Scheduling the Exam
Once your application has been approved, you can schedule your exam. The NHIE is administered by PSI, a professional testing company, at various testing centers across the United States. To schedule your exam, you must create an account on the PSI website and choose a date, time, and location that is convenient for you.
Step 3: Taking the Exam
On the day of the exam, you must arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. You will need to bring two forms of identification, one of which must be a government-issued photo ID. You will have four hours to complete the exam, which consists of 200 multiple-choice questions.
